Manowar - the initiators of true metal. I do not need many words here because I know that EVERYONE reading this knows 'em. I remember when I first heard >Wheels of Fire<: It really took my breath away and the earth stopped rotating for seconds. An unbelievable Speed Metal assault with mercyless guitars and a voice not of the planet! The following title-track is a typical Manowar song. Midtempo, mighty melodies and self-censeing lyrics about the kings which they really were with this album. >Heart of Steel< is a classic ballad that has also been released on 12" with (very funny) german lyrics. After the instr. >Sting of the bumblebee< comes with >The Crown and the Ring [Lament of the Kings]< an epic hymn with great chorusses. >Kingdom Come< is a straight banger with very intense feelings and some of the best melodies I have ever heard! The CD-Bonus >Pleasure Slave< is a slower and "pounding" track with lyrics that my girlfriend don't like at all (why, darling?). Before the next track you better take a seat: >Hail and Kill< is surely one of the best songs of Manowar which means it's one of the best songs in metal! A slow beginning changes into a glorious speedmetal hymn, makeing Joey DeMaio (the writer) immortal!!! A real monolith of metal!!! >Warriors Prayer< is a little spoken story - strange but courages to put it on the album. The final >Blood of the Kings< is again a track that appears to strong to believe. Maybe Joey has sold his soul for this record. But if so - it was worth it!!! Here we have an album that is to metal fans as important as the bible to the christians, the satanic bible to the satanists, or water for the one dying of thirst ...
All other Manowar records are absolutly great, too. Only the last one "Louder Than Hell" has been a big disappointment. For the first time very uninspired music, some tracks are from the time before their first record! These tracks have been to weak for more than 15 years. But they are featured on "Louder...". Think that says it all... Also is Karl Logan a very average guitar-player in my opinion. A nobody compared to Ross the Boss or Dave Shankle. Let's all hope for better stuff to come in the future!
